Daily Living Made Easier

Shields have added to my grandchildrens pleasure with our fave ball tag gameHow's the weather in your neck of the woods? We're still waiting for the oft-promised but yet to show up snow. Friends and relatives on both coasts rarely have snow. If you and your grandkids are experiencing weather that allows outdoor play, here's a fun new variation my grandkids came up with for our perennial favorite, ball tag.

It started when one grandkid grabbed the lone shield in their toybox and used it to defend himself during ball tag. Of course, the rest of the grandkids wanted one too. So off we went to the Dollar store (such a wonderful resource for all of us grandparents, and boy – do I see a lot of compadres in there every time I go) and got little shields for each of them for a $1. We still throw the ball at each other to tag them out, but they can use the shields to defend themselves. Since I am always picked to go first, it's turning out to be a shade on the boring side for me because now it's MUCH harder to get them "out," but they absolutely LOVE it! Which makes it fun for me as well. Go figure. (A grandparent's heart, I guess 🙂 ).

The Dollar Store is a grand resource for grandparents and their grandchildren

Even the granddogs think it's a bit of a hoot! How about you? Have you ever tried ball tag, with or without shields? Or do you have other fun variations. With winter weather, any chance I can get the grandkids outside and running I GRAB it! So I love to hear of new ideas. 🙂

  1. We’ve never played ball tag but I’m certainly adding it to the list! I think it was you that posted a game of trying to kick the ball while swinging — Amara and have tried this a number of times and we just can’t seem to get in sync but we have a blast trying! I worry if she ever does kick that ball it is going to go flying on to the roof.

    Oh Grampy…

OMGoodness does this ever sound like fun! My 4 year old grandsons would LOVE it! I’m a dollar store fan too. Amazing what they can sell for that amount. I’m going to look for these in the next few days. We’ve had a little snow so maybe we could even work out a little snowball action. I’ll have the same problem that you do, though….it will always be “grandma first!” and I’ll be exhausted. But like you say…oh well, what else is a grandparent for anyway?

  2. 🙂 Hi Joyce. I keep reminding myself how good the exercise is for my weight, my arthritis, and my general well-being, all the while panting away and sometimes aching a bit. 🙂 🙂 🙂 But oh, those grand memories! 🙂 🙂 🙂 Merry Christmas!

  3. Thanks Debra! Enjoy! 🙂
