Daily Living Made Easier

When you are visiting various blogs, do you ever read the comments others have left? I frequently do and often discover wonderful nuggets of useful information in them. In fact, just last week I was reading the very interesting article, GRG (Grandparents Raising Grandkids) Families: More Than Just Free Babysitting, by Michelle Seitzer at Seniors For Living. The article, itself, discusses the wide range of grandparent care provided to families all around the world – from occasional babysitting, to pappy and granny nannies like me (in AND out of the Sandwich Generation) who are babysitting a lot, to the GRG-grandparents who are raising their grandkids.

SeniorsForLiving.com is a great resource for this Sandwich Generation granny nanny - for the grandkids as well as caring for elderly parents

It’s a fascinating article with several great resources. And you’ll find even more good info in the comments – specifically one comment by Gayle Byrne who, along with her husband, is raising her granddaughter full-time. In it, she shared that she has written a children’s book, Sometimes It’s Grandmas and Grandpas, Not Mommies and Daddies. That sounded quite intriguing, so I purchased a copy just to review here at SandwichINK and I’m so glad I did. It’s a great little book in and of itself. But it’s bound to be a special joy for all those grandkids who’s mommy and daddy aren’t ever there to tuck them in to bed or take them to school.

As Ms. Byrne explains in the author’s note in the back (where you can also find websites that focus on grandparents raising grandchildren), she came up with the book when she was reading a traditional children’s bedtime story to her granddaughter – all about a mommy and daddy caring for the child. Her granddaughter looked rather confused, and she realized she had no good books about grandparents raising grandchildren. “I knew the child cuddling in my lap had a valid and valuable story too…It was a story that needed to be written.” Very true!

This sweet book can be a big help to grandparents raising their grandkids. It can help the grandchildren see they have plenty of company out there! I don’t know about you, but that’s always a big encouragement to me. 🙂

I really enjoyed Sometimes It’s Grandmas and Grandpas: Not Mommies and Daddies even though that’s not something I am specifically dealing with. If you are a grandparent who is raising young grandchildren full-time, in OR out of the Sandwich Generation, you might also want to check it out – just click here 🙂

  1. Kaye, thanks for the great information and great post. Michelle Seitzer at Seniors For Living does a great job at bringing timely and useful info in her blog, I agree. I have been involved in long term care for over 30 years and I have seen the wonderful effect that intergenerational activities have on our seniors. Numerous studies have clearly demonstrated the positive impact such activities have on the lives of the elderly. The activities that you advocate through your site make life better for both the grandchildren but also the grandparents.

Thanks Kaye for your work on behalf of seniors everywhere. Keep it up!
