Happy Columbus Day to the Sandwich Generation grandparents and grandchildren with this cute country boat clipartHappy Columbus Day! My elderly parents have been enjoying the lovely fall foliage. Our grandkids are out of school on this fun day in Autumn and some of yours might be as well. I thought it would be fun to “explore” the net and find some creative Columbus Day ideas, worksheets, printables and other activities for grandparents and grandchildren in AND out of the Sandwich Generation. Join us, won’t you?

  1. Find a “pick your own” orchard or farmer’s market nearby. Pack up the grandkids and take them out for a lovely autumn trip to pick their own fruits and vegetables. Fall harvest time means apples and pumpkins are especially plentiful right now. I just found this great site, Pick Your Own, to help us. I tested it on an area I know well and it looked great. 🙂
  2. If you’ve already been, or if you have time when you get home with bags full of yummy apples, put some of those great apple dessert recipes from Friday to good use with those fresh apples. Won’t our elderly parents enjoy them as well!
  3. Check out the fun and easy Columbus Day projects, crafts and coloring pages for kids (and us seniors who help them) at Enchanted Learning. While this is a membership site overall, they do have many free ideas and directions available including this fun idea of making a map,  along with ships made from egg cartons. My grandkids did a delightful job on this a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed it thoroughly!
  4. DLTK has several Columbus Day projects that look like fun, including a homemade sailor’s hat.

A sweet Columbus Day for the Sandwich Generation granny nanny and grandkids along with a cute country map clip artDefinitely lots of fun and educational ideas abound online, wonderful for all of us in the busy Sandwich Generation. Fun things do your grandchiildren and you. Delightful for our elderly parents. And a fun way of caring for this caregiver. What do you think? Like these ideas or have others to share with us. We’d love to hear. And Happy Columbus Day. 🙂
