I love it when I am sharing encouraging Bible memory verses with my grandchildren and they start learning it and saying it with me. Being boys, sometimes they feel they have to be "macho" so they just listen – but then I'll catch them mouthing the words when no one is watching. Sweet joys for this grandma to see their love for our precious Savior growing, bit by bit, month by month. Having this opportunity of leaving a sweet spiritual legacy of Scripture and song in their hears and minds is one of the best parts of being in the Sandwich Generation!
I often read to them from their kids Bibles in both NIV and NIrV. I especially loved the way the NIrV put this particular passage from Romans 5:8-11 – Here is how God has shown his love for us. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. The blood of Christ has made us right with God. So we are even more sure that Jesus will save us from God's anger. Once we were God's enemies. But we have been brought back to him because his Son has died for us. Now that God has brought us back, we are even more secure. We know that we will be saved because Christ lives. And that is not all. We are full of joy in God because of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of him, God has brought us back to himself.
It teaches them all the vital points of the passage and stays true to the original, while making some rather heavy theology a bit more "bite-sized" and understandable for the grandkids. What do you think? It certainly seems like a great passage to read together many times during this third week in Lent 2012 – great for the kids AND all of us boomers and seniors reading to them and with them. 🙂

I like that translation – thanks, Kaye. Our story about a ‘macho’ son who didn’t want to go to church youth group is that I prayed with him and later he said to me: ‘Hey, that prayer about finding friends and meaning at the youth group really worked!’ I was so moved…
Oh Floss – doesn’t that give you chills up and down! I know it does for me when I am blessed with something like that. Have a great day!
Praise God for godly grandparents!! I am blessed by what I read here 🙂 Thanks for sharing.
