How are your daily Bible studies or devotionals coming? It's so vital for the children of God to be in the Word of God on a daily basis. That's especially true for caregivers to help keep us on an even keel. Yet, it can also be so difficult for us to do it on a regular daily basis because of the needs of those we are caring for. I'm continuing to be blessed by the verse by verse Bible studies from fellow grandparent and baby boomer Pastor Joe Focht of Calvary Chapel Philadelphia. I'm not perfect, but I usually don't miss more than a day or two a month. Sometimes it's 5 minutes here and 10 minutes there until I get my full 30 minutes in. Sometimes, I get to spend more time in the Word. And always, God blesses me through the listening, the teaching, and the learning. I have to admit, I think I may have skipped a couple of chapters along about mid-way through Numbers. But overall, I've been plugging away, and I'm now finishing up 2 Samuel.
King David has always been such a sweet source of inspiration and encouragement to me – both in his life (including his mis-steps) and in his Psalms. I've been thinking so much about him and the lessons we can learn from him the last several weeks as I've listened to 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel. And after all, as the King of Israel, he was – in a sense – the caregiver to his people. Talk about distractions, interruptions, and frustrations! He knew them all well. So when he reminds us that God is our shield and the lifter of our head, we know he knew what he was talking about!
I spent years in church as a young mom, singing this lovely old-er Christian hymn, Thou O Lord, Art A Shield About Me. This is almost the same version we used. It's as much a blessing to me now as it was back then. I pray it's a blessing to you as well. And that you will be blessed by the Word of God today. The Sandwich Generation issues of life may try to keep us down, BUT GOD is the lifter of our heads!!!!
P.S. For those of you who, like me, lean hopefully to the pre-tribulation rapture described in the Left Behind book series, I would encourage you to get one of Calvary Chapel Philadelphia's Bible apps. Not only does it have the current verse by verse Bible studies they are working on, it has the lectures from their recent 2012 Prophecy Conference which sounded very interesting. I'm going to be taking a break this week from 2 Samuel to listen to these as I continue to keep a close eye on the world news and keep praying for the nation of Israel!
