As you may recall from You CAN Have the Fruit of the Spirit For Your Grandkids’ Summer Project – Part 1 , I am working on several Bible Memory verses for a summer project with my grandkids. Part 1 has a list of sites with fun coloring pages to print, including Bible coloring pages, and word puzzles, along with a cute Christian kids music video of a song to help us memorize Galatians 5:22-23. Plus, I found the cute book (pictured above) focusing on the Fruits of the Holy Spirit for our grand kids.
This should make for fun Bible memorization activities for grandparents and their grandchildren and I'm really looking forward to it. Today I wanted to share the actual verses I’m planning on working on throughout the summer. This project could also work well in a home schooling program for summer or all year.
Here’s my list of the various Bible memory verses I've picked. The ones I am definitely planning on memorizing are in bold. The others are in case we go much faster than we probably will AND for those of you with older grandkids who would like more of a challenge. Part of my situation includes the fact that I don’t know how much time we will actually have to work on this project due to vacation plans. And come September, we will be back in the throes of Awanas, so any verses unfinished will be saved for next summer. With that said, here we go:
LOVE
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this, you shall love your neighbor as yourself. Mark 12:30-31a*
JOY
The joy of the LORD is your strength. Nehemiah 8:10
PEACE
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee. Is. 26:3 KJV – I am using King James for this because I often sing a praise song to them based on those exact words. It was a simple chorus I learned at Calvary Chapel two decades ago, but still keeps me calm today! I tried to find it on the internet so you could hear it, but so far have struck out. If any of you know where to find this song, do let us know. 🙂
Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. John 14:27
PATIENCE
Love is patient. Love is kind and is not jealous. 1 Corinthians 13:4
Be patient with everyone. I Thess. 5:14b
KINDNESS
As those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you. Colossians 3:12
GOODNESS
Do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased . Hebrews 13:16
For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
FAITHFULNESS
God is faithful – 1 Corinthians 1:9 Song – God is faithful, God is true, God is love, God loves you – sung to the tune of Frères Jacques
Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. Revelation 2:10
I have chosen to be faithful; I have determined to live by your laws . Psalm 119:30 (New Living Translation)
GENTLENESS
As those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you. Colossians 3:12 (This is a repeat/review of the verse used for kindness. Since it’s so long, I think that will work well for my grandkids. I will have them learn part of the verse for kindness, then add to it for gentleness.)
SELF-CONTROL
God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power and love and self-control . 2 Timothy 1:7 (Revised Standard Version)
Well, that should keep us busy for a while. If I find more songs and/or sites that will help with this project, I’ll pass the information along in a future post. For that matter, I would love your input as well – for both summer fun ideas or additional ways to implement them in your grandkids' home schooling program. Please leave any ideas in the comments section.
I’m going to end this post with a funny story on myself about the verse for LOVE – Mark 12:30-31. I love this verse and I love to sing the Lincoln Brewster's praise and worship music, Love the Lord your God with all your heart, based on this verse. I am always singing it to my grandkids. But I am always messing up the lyrics. Is it “heart, soul, strength, mind” or “heart, soul, mind, strength?” Turns out it’s both – depending on which book you are reading! In looking up verses to choose for this project I discovered in Mark it is “mind, strength” and in Luke it’s “strength, mind.” NO WONDER I kept messing it up!! That made me feel SOOOO much better! I picked the verse from Mark because it matched Lincoln’s song and I wanted to use the song as well. Maybe my grandkids will be able to keep them straight now even though their grandma can’t. 🙂
Enjoy these fun and challenging opportunities to teach the Fruit of the Spirit to your grand children using books, activities, crafts, and songs, knowing that you are planting eternal seeds of God's love and inspirational Bible verses in their hearts. Aren't those wonderful activities for grandparents and their grandchildren in the Sandwich Generation! And don't forget to add to your delightful family memories with your easy to use digital camera! 🙂
Thank you Kaye! I am going to do a study of the Fruits of the Spirit with my 5th & 6th grade Sunday School girls and am looking for ideas and wanted scripture to memorize to go along with each lesson – so this is super! Thanks for sharing and God Bless!
