Well, fellow grandparents of the Sandwich Generation, it’s that time again. The grandkids are out of school. For many of us, that means more time with them, more fun activities for grandparents and their grandchildren – both hot and wet, and more head scratching to come up with creative, interesting, and educational things to do in all that extra time!
As I wrote in Planting God’s Love in Grandkids’ Hearts and A Caregiver’s Love is Patient , I’m doing a summer Bible Memory verses project with my grandkids based on teaching the Fruit of the Spirit lesson from Galatians using crafts, activities, and fun kids praise and worship music. I thought you might enjoy finding some useful tools and ideas with me.
As I was looking for activity sheets and projects I found a terrific music video from YouTube with The Fruit of the Spirit song that I want to share with you. Even if you don’t do this project, I think you and your grandkids will enjoy the video. My grandkids and I have been having a blast singing it together periodically. There’s actually a few different versions of this song but this particular one, from Rich Nelson Music, is our favorite:
I’m using the New International Version (NIV) of the Fruit of the Spirit passage for my grandkids, which is the same version as in the song. I am also just having them memorize Galatians 5:22-23a. Since they are younger, it’s easier for them to understand:
- The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23a
Here are some sites with great resources, such as coloring pages, mazes, word puzzles, and more:
- Coloring Pages Fruit of the Spirit
- Maze
- DLTK has a nice teacher’s guide for teaching about the different fruit. They also found some really cute fruit pictures at ColoringWS that I know my grandkids will enjoy. In addition, they have an interesting cadence, a spoken marching “song.” I like it, but it is in a different order. I think it would be good for older grandkids who won’t get mixed up, but I’ll probably skip it for this year. DLTK is definitely a one-stop shop for the Fruit of the Spirit, as these worksheets and mazes prove.
Well, this post turned out to be so long, I’ve broken it into two parts. Be sure to also read You CAN Have the Fruit of the Spirit For Your Grandkids’ Summer Project – Part 2 , with the actual inspirational and encouraging Bible Memory verses we’re hoping to memorize. We’re looking forward to building fun family memories together! As always, I value your input. If you have any ideas or suggestions for these summer activities for grandparents and their grandchildren, we’d love to hear from you.
P.S. You can find the mp3 download of the fun Fruit of the Spirit song, from the album Crazy Praize, by clicking here. 🙂
I would like to thank you for your help! We are having Vacation Bible School and our theme is Fruits of the Spirit. I had no clue what I would do for a presentation. I goggled fruits of the spirit and clicked on your link the momuent I heard the song I said that’s it! Perfect for my class age group.
