It’s a new month. It’s a new year. But most of the trials and tribulations we are dealing with are not new to those of us in the Sandwich Generation, caring for our elderly parents while raising children, or as in my case, helping with our grandkids.
One of the comforting Bible verses that has been such a blessing to me over the years is:
This is my comfort in my affliction,
that Your Word has revived me.
Psalm 119:50
I have to tell you, that’s one of the many wonderful promises of God in the Bible that has continually been proven true for me over the years.
Many is the night I’ve been lying in bed, so very tired yet unable to sleep because of the problems I was juggling. Worry, fear, anxiety – all were gnawing away and keeping me awake. But, when I grab my NIV Life Application Bible and read from the encouraging Word of God, or listen to verse by verse Bible studies on my iPod, God uses His Word to comfort me, encourage me, and relax me. And, almost always, He even uses it to lull me back to sleep. If you’re not already doing a regular, daily Bible study, I’d highly recommend it to you. The Bible is God’s love letter to us. Our awesome God, speaking to each of us personally and specifically through His Word.
I have my own verse by verse Bible study I love, interspersed with the church group Bible study as well as the sermons on my iPod.
My personal goal is 30 minutes a day but I started doing this decades ago with only five minutes a day and was blessed by that. I kept it up and God has helped me grow it to my current 30 minutes. I learned to NOT make it a legalistic requirement. If I can’t do it, I don’t worry about it. But I do choose to give the time to God each day as a gift. And after awhile, I discovered such joy for me in this gift to Him!
How about you? Do you already do daily verse by verse or other kind of Bible studies? Is that a New Year’s resolution? How do you work it in to your busy caregiving schedule? We’d love to hear. P.S. Speaking of affliction – my website and I have been very afflicted for the last three days as I tried to do some important updates. Looks like it is one tool in particular so hopefully we can avoid more issues. It did, however, result in hours and hours of extra work to fix it, plus my having to rebuild four posts, losing some comments, and sending out four repeat emails in error. All of which were beyond my control but for all of which I humbly apologize. 🙂 If you have any questions, do feel free to write me at SandwichINK @ Gmail.com (typed normally). And YES, as frustrating as these issues were, the Word of God was a true blessing during this time – keeping me going and reviving my spirits when they sank. 🙂 As Paul constantly reminds us all, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and IN EVERYTHING give thanks!” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 – even computer and blog glitches. 🙂
P.P.S. Another Christian resource for the Sandwich Generation, full of words of encouragement and inspiration along with comforting Bible verses, is 90 Days of God’s Goodness by Randy Alcorn.
we were driving today on a crazy freeway and I started to panic. My dgt. shouted out from the back…”Mom…when I am afraid I will trust in HIm.” I said it with her and then we all made up a song with those words and soon…peace overwhelmed me. His word has a power that nothing can compare to…Happy New Year.
Very nice bible verses. It’s so good to know that we can turn to the word of God for anything we need. I am up to about 15 minutes per day to spend in the word. On most days.
Awesome example of how to use encouraging Bible verses in difficult situations, Sarah. Thank you 🙂
Hi Hip Chick, Soooo true! And great job! Isn’t it a blessing to have that daily time in the Word of God and hear Him speak to us! 🙂
It is so good to have these scriptures to remind us that He is always in control and we need to relax and let Him do the “driving.” Thank you for sharing your heart.
Blessings for a wonderful New Year.
Charlotte
Hi Charlotte, Amen and AMEN! 🙂
