While praying – and worrying – about a situation in my Sandwich Generation family, I realized there was nothing I could do about it. And I told God that. I prayed for Him to take over totally and I surrendered it all over to Him. What a sense of relief I felt. And then I remembered an old Scripture passage I'd always loved but not quite understood and it was like a light bulb went off. I finally got it!
"Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30 "For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." Matthew 11:28-30
I was never quite sure how to give HIm my burdens and take His. But this time, when I literally held out my hand and "gave the situation" to Him, I realized that I WAS giving Him my burden. And I felt so much lighter wrapped in His comfort and presence. Don't get me wrong. I've done this many times before and it's always been a blessing. But it was the first time I connected this action to the passage in Matthew.
Our Sandwich Generation issues can definitely be a challenge many times in our lives. But when we choose to surrender EVERYTHING, including those issues, to God, we can rest in His promises and provision.
How about you? Has an old familiar verse taken on a new "light" for you lately? We'd love to hear about it. 🙂
P.S. Want a coloring page to help your grandkids learn this verse as well? Your wish is my command! 🙂
Yes, such good thoughts, and good reminders to release our burdens and cares to Him. And definitely we have many opportunities to do this in the generation are in, the “sandwich” generation! Linking up right after you at Faith Filled Friday.
Isn’t it interesting how many verses take on new meaning when God sheds light on them? His Word just never grows old.
Hey, I came over to thank you for your sweet comment on my “owl” blog post, but instead I got massively encouraged!!!!! I love you for this post! There’s a family situation that has literally worried me into the ground … and I wondered why I don’t feel close to the Lord any more, well duh – gotta surrender all to Him and take His peace (which is the main thing he promised, absolutely promised, us right?! I just held out my hands and surrendered it to the Lord and now I’m free to have peace – thank you so much!!!!! Mary
P.S. For 7 years my husband and I cared for my elderly parents in our home while at the same time caring for our special needs preschool Romanian adopted children. My take on this was that the middle layer gets squished! Would do it all over again though because I did it all for the Lord! I’m coning back to see you!!!!!
Wonderful insights. God brings new meanings to His word to me every time I read it. Thank you for the printable. 🙂
Thank you. Kristi, and you’re very welcome 🙂
Amen, Pamela, AMEN!
Oh Mary, thank you for your sweet words of encouragement. And praising God with You for His blessings. And you are so right – when we go through the Sandwich Generation and surrender even that into His hands, He makes a ton of miracles in our lives, doesn’t He? 🙂
Hi Cherry, thank you so much. 🙂 And you aren’t kidding – TONS of opportunities! But praise God, tons of miracles too 🙂 Have a blessed week!
