Transitioning your Aging Parent - a book for those caring for elderly parents - by Dale CarterAs I have been hard at work learning how and what TO learn about Facebook, and spending extra time there this week doing so, I found a great new resource FROM a great resource we already appreciate here at SandwichINK. Dale Carter, author of Transitioning Your Aging Parent, wrote about a program put together by retired Ohio State Highway Patrol Assistant District Commander, Matt Gurwell.

Caring for elderly parents and concerned about their driving - Beyond Driving with DignityAt his website, Keeping Us Safe, you'll find his workbook, Beyond Driving with Dignity, which is also available through AmazonWhen I spotted this, I thought how great the timing was since it fits in well with our on-going series, News and Resources For Baby Boomers and Seniors Caring for Elderly Parents With Debilitating Illnesses Such as Stroke or End Stage Parkinsons Disease Patients

I've already written Caring for Elderly Parents Who Combine Driving With Health Issues? and Caring for Elderly Parents Who Combine Driving With Health Issues? Part 2 with several excellent resources. When I spotted her note at Facebook, I immediately wrote and asked Dale for more information about Mr. Gurwell's resources. She replied:

He is a ex-state trooper in Ohio who decided, upon retiring, to help families avoid getting the terrible visits he used to have to make when an elderly loved one died in an accident. I have personally met Matt and can vouch for him. His program is comprehensive.

She also referred me to her article about him, Comprehensive Guide for Aging Parents to Drive Safely, with more information. As she describes it there, it is a resource-full how-to guide. In addition, there is an actual driving exercise to be done with your aging parent, complete with a checklist to help all of you make the vital decisions that are so important – and that can literally be a matter of life and death.

While visiting her site, I noticed she had also done a Blog Talk Radio show interview with him on this topic. You should be able to listen to it here by clicking on the little arrow in the box below, otherwise you can also click here to go directly to Blog Talk Radio and listen.
