Did you have a nice Christmas? We did. And an educational one as well. Did you or your senior parent get a Mr Coffee 4 cup coffee maker like my senior mom did? Does it have an auto shut off feature? If not, you might want to exchange it for one that does. Why you might ask? Because of the unrelenting fact that most of us, as we age, tend to forget things easier and easier. It doesn't necessarily mean we have Alzheimer's Disease or other serious problems. But it does mean we need to take proactive steps to prevent problems.
One such problem can be fires caused by forgetting to turn off appliances. So whenever it's an option, we always buy them with the auto shut off features. Irons, coffee makers, etc. And for those things, like electric ranges, that don't offer that, we always shop for ones that have lights to let us know something is still hot.
It's a great safety tip for the elderly that also protects the youngerly (is that really a word? 🙂 ). Grandkids can accidentally turn knobs or push buttons and not even realize it. And, if any of our family ever does develop Alzheimer's Disease, we'll doubly appreciate these features. This is definitely one of those great tips for the whole Sandwich Generation family. And yes, Mr. Coffee DOES make coffee makers with AND without this feature, as we just learned. So the one we got locally is headed back to the return aisle. And the Mr Coffee 4 cup auto shut off coffee maker I found at Amazon is taking its place proudly on the counter. Can you think of other appliances that have auto turnoff options? 🙂
