The Chattanooga Choo-Choo…Tuxedo Junction…In the Mood. These are just some of the fun "big band" songs I grew up listening to, as they were definite favorites of my senior parents. Just hearing a few music notes of these and other swinging instrumentals brings back such sweet family memories. So when I discovered the Big Band Hymns, I thought it would be a delightful treat for my senior mom and myself, plus be a fun intro to that swingin' big band music style for my grandkids.

Many of the old hymns songs are instrumental, like "What a Friend We have In Jesus" and "Amazing Grace." Some, like "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho," (my senior mom and I thought it was sung in the style of the Andrews Sisters) and "He Keeps Me Singing," do have lyrics. I have long enjoyed my Big Band Christmas CD so this actually gives me a hint of Christmas without actually being Christmas music.  :)   Very fun. Here's one of my Smilebox eCards creations with the big band rendition of the sweet old gospel hymn, "I'll Fly Away." What do you think of it?

Have a blessed and beautiful day. And be sure to stop by Spiritual Sunday for more uplifting praise and worship hymn songs and music, along with encouraging and comforting Bible verses and devotions to bless all ages from the young and young at heart on up to our beloved elderly seniors. 🙂

  1. The somgs you mentioned I gre up liatening to as well.My Dad told me about the time he and his younger brother went to see Glenn Miller play here in Cleveland he played all three tune you mentioned. I would have love to see Mr Miller and his bad play those tunes live but I was not even thought of at that time.Mom and Dad married after WW2 and Mr. miller was already gone from this world.

  2. To be honest I never really liked the song I’ll Fly Away, but just about everybody I know loves it. I like the big band version better than the way we sang it in church. I know it will appeal to many. It was a great idea. You make good Smilebox videos. Thanks for sharing.
    Blessings,
    Charlotte

  3. I’m not a big band fan, but I really enjoyed the Amazing Grace. Hymns are awesome in any form. Thanks for sharing and God bless, Bobbi

  4. Thanks Bobbi 🙂 And too true on hymns 🙂 🙂 🙂

  5. Oh how fun Mike. I’ll have to share your fun family memories with my senior mom. She’ll really appreciate them. 🙂

  6. Thanks Charlotte. 🙂 I’m with you on the hymn – the traditional church version is not my cup of tea either. But this Big Band version or the one by David Crowder band are both ones I do enjoy. Have a blessed week 😉

I think they are great Kaye. They make me feel how close and special Christmas is. I love listening to this music and listening to them makes me believe about the spirit of Christmas.
