Daily Living Made Easier

It’s raining! It’s been raining for a couple of days. I can’t complain though. From Colorado to Arkansas and beyond, it’s acting like the middle of winter with a ton of snow! If you can stay curled up inside in front of the fireplace with a good book, it’s great weather. If you have the grandkids coming over to spend the day, it’s a little less exhilarating. So I thought it might be fun to share some of my favorite rainy day/snowy day activities and ideas for grandparents and their grandchildren.

  1. Play Gobblet.
  2. Play new or old board games including junior board games like Hi Ho Cherry-O for little ones or harder games like Monopoly for the older ones. I like to focus on educational toys so that they are learning as they have fun. If you have toddlers, it's hard to find games for toddlers but there are a few. Cranium Cariboo is one of our favorites.
  3. Play Cards – Crazy Eights, Old Maid, Go Fish, War.
  4. Play Tic Tac Toe or print out mazes and word searches and let them have fun working on those.
  5. Make a collage using magazine pictures, old scraps of fabric and yarn, buttons, parts of old and broken costume jewelry, glue, markers, and crayons.
  6. Have a paper airplane contest.
  7. You can even have fun with some outdoor toys. Play with soft Frisbees and soft balls inside. As long as there aren't too many breakables close by, you should be able to do so safely.
  8. Have a tea party – real or pretend.
  9. Have a fun film festival – With Hermie and Friends for the little ones and The Chronicles of Narnia Movies for the older ones.
  10. Help your grandkids write letters to cousins or other relatives who don’t live nearby.
  11. Make paper bag puppets and let them put on a puppet show.
  12. Bring out a bunch of your clothes for them to play dress up.
  13. Bring out the Resurrection Easter Eggs and have a fun time looking for the Easter Eggs and then retelling the Easter story.
  14. Make popcorn and a fire and tell jokes and riddles around the fire.
  15. Bring in a bunch of blankets and pillows and let them have fun building forts.
  16. If you have an enclosed patio, dress warmly and play on it while enjoying the sight of the rain and/or snow.
  17. Play a computer game with them. If they have any of the Webkinz stuffed animals and a membership, then our favorite games are all found at Webkinz.
  18. Play Hide N Seek.
  19. Read to them. If they are old enough, pick a long book like Little Women. If they are younger, Amelia Bedelia or The Squire and the Scroll are great.
  20. Help them gather up all the dolls and stuffed animals and play school with them.
  21. Bake something yummy.
  22. If you’re feeling ambitious enough to go out, head for a museum.
  23. After the museum, have fun playing at Chuck E. Cheese or a pizza parlor with fun games.
  24. When you are ready for a rest, head for the discount movie theater.
  25. Wear them out well, so you can all go to bed early and hopefully wake up to weather that will let them play outside. 🙂
