Ready to start some fun Bible memory verses activities for grandparents and their grandchildren? 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8a, 13 are the Bible memory verses I’m using for my grand children and that passage is chock full of short little verses to teach us the Biblical definition of love in a way our kids and grandkids can easily understand and enjoy.
Of course, all of OUR grandchildren are perfect and NEVER deal with sibling rivalry, right? NOT!!!! Just as my brother and I had our moments, and my kids had theirs, my sweet grand-cherubs have been know to deal with it as well. So this is an excellent passage for them to “soak their minds and hearts in” for the summer. As David says in Psalm 119:11-12a, “Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You! Blessed are You, O Lord!” This is one of my favorite ways to help our grandchildren do just that!
Fruit of the Spirit Review
This particular passage is also a great follow-up to last year’s “The Fruit of the Spirit.” In fact, I started out by reminding my grandkids of that verse, which they still knew, along with some of the other verses we memorized last year. We enjoyed singing the song again as well. If you don’t know it, be sure to enjoy the Fruit of the Spirit video. It’s so much fun to sing together. Then we worked on the first section, Love is Patient. I reminded them of our snail song, Have Patience, from the Music Man (see below), and we had fun singing that also.
Love is Patient, Love is Kind for the Grand-Toddlers
A comment at SandwichINK earlier this week from Angie gave me the fun idea to add some simple songs for toddlers to this year’s project. My grandsons are a bit old for them, but I’ve got some younger granddaughters who will enjoy them. Next time we’re on the phone together, I’ll sing them for the cutie-pies (one of our fun ideas for grandparents to stay in touch and close to grandchildren when living far away). Then, when I get to see them in person, we can have fun singing them altogether. I think that helps them more easily associate the voice on the phone with the grandma that they get to see every so often. 🙂 I will warn you, I am NOT a great song writer. But I do have fun putting simple rhymes and phrases to familiar tunes for toddlers. And they are usually not a critical audience which definitely helps! 🙂 Here’s my first toddler tune. What do you think? (Sung to the tune of Frere Jacques / Brother John)
Love is patient
Love is kind
Love doesn’t envy
Love doesn’t boast
Love is patient
Love is kind
Love never fails
Love never fails
This song covers the first 4 Bible memory verses along with emphasizing the last. And what great character qualities they are learning for a lifetime! As we sing these through the whole summer, some vital concepts for our grand children will be woven into their hearts in a fun and special way, no matter how young they are.
Love is Patient In Bible Memory Verses and Stories
For my older grandchildren, I’ll continue our normal practice. Every time we get together, we say each verse at least three times. Then we read a Bible story that is applicable, along with other stories that may mesh well. Last week, we somehow got on the topic of heaven and Jesus going up to heaven after his death and resurrection. So this week, I read them the passage from Acts 1:6-11:
When they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel ?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority ; but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. They also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky ? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”
We talked about that story, then I pointed out that this means we have to show our love for God by being patient as we wait for Jesus’ return. Next, I’m planning on reading them “The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.” 1 Peter 3:9 That will give us the chance to talk about God’s example of patience to us and to those who don’t yet know Him as their Savior. And how our practicing patience can be a great way to show others God’s love. Which will then work well with Romans 12:12(NIV), “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”

1 Corinthians 13:4-8a, 13 Songs
Two songs I love for this series include an old favorite I used to sing with my children, Have Patience from The Music Machine , and a new one I just discovered, It’s Love by Maynard’s Groovy Bible Tunes. (With a business name that has Groovy in it, I have to wonder if he is also one of the never-aging members of the Baby Boomers Generation? :)).
He has a great selection of cute and peppy kids Christian praise and worship songs. You can order the cds or download them individually, which I just did. It’s quite a cute little song all about 1 Corinthians 13 and Love. The gentleman who records the songs and runs this site is located in England, so the prices are in pounds. I paid with Paypal and it converted it quite easily from £0.70 to about $1.07. I imagine it would do the same if you paid directly by credit card.
Well, these fun Bible Memory Verses activities for grandparents and their grandchildren will certainly keep this Sandwich Generation granny nanny busy this week. How about you? Be sure to check back next week, when we are moving on to Love is Kind. And in the meantime, enjoy It’s Love from Maynards Groovy Bible Tunes. 🙂
