If you are trying to decide between assisted living and a nursing home for an elderly parent, Home Instead Senior Care’s article offers some good things to consider.

Lilly Sold Drug for Dementia Knowing It Didn’t Help! Just goes to show we need to keep asking questions, keep researching, and keep learning when we are caring for our aging parents.

GRANDKIDS:

Even if you’re really careful about those photos of grandkids online, they could wind up in places you don’t want them. Here’s an interesting article about a family photo that showed up larger than life on the

BABY BOOMER GENERATION

Yummm – do you have a breadmaker you are not using? Here’s a recipe I’m going to try out on my senior mom just as soon as I pull mine out of storage.

If you are flying this summer, whether alone or with aging parents and/or grandkids, don’t count on blankets and pillows being available. I usually carry my own, but recently flew with one of my grandkids and we both forgot to bring our jackets. When I asked for blankets and pillows, Southwest explained that they had removed them due to swine flu precautions. So far, it’s just Southwest, but according to an article by Chron.com, it not only is healthier, it saves airlines money. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more airlines follow this example. And after reading the article, I don’t know that I want to use them anymore myself!

Are you thinking of moving near grandkids or aging parents in Boise? If so, you’ll be happy to know that it is number 4 on the U.S. News’ “Best Places to Live 2009″ What if your family lives elsewhere? There’s several other cities mentioned as well.

Vitamin D Deficiency May Lead to Dementia and many in the 50-70 year old age range may be Vitamin D deficient!

Some interesting food tips to enjoy sharing with your aging parents from the Foodimentary Guy – Did you know that Carrots used to be only white or purple. Orange varieties were thought to be created in the 1500′s to honor William I, Prince of Orange! Also, within two hours of standing in daylight, milk loses between half and two-thirds of its vitamin B content! And last but definitely not least, he has an intriguing new site coming out – Vegimentary.com! It’s not there yet, but I’m watching for it too

“Jenn of Frugal Upstate and Lynnae of Being Frugal get together every Monday at 8:30 p.m. EST (5:30 PST) to share tips, tricks and techniques to help you live a great life while spending less. They go
beyond coupon clipping and sale shopping” and have 20 podcasts on money saving topics that you can put in your mp3 player and listen to as you shuttle aging parents and grandkids around town or do your housework. Even better, listen as you take a walk and exercise your brain and your body at the same time. One of my favorite ways to do it!

In Christ and through faith in Him, we may approach God with freedom and confidence.

Looking for a new cell phone? I can’t use the iPhone because it is too wide for my hand but I have two daughters who LOVE it. If that’s you, too, did you know that Apple slashed the price of a new one to $99? It’s very handy for caregivers who often have to be away from their computer but need info. My smart phone is smart but the iPhone is faster!

CAREGIVING:

I’m Hungry, I’m Starving. An excellent article from Alzheimer’s Reading Room .

Important reminder from Dale Carter of Transition Aging Parents : June 12 is Digital TV Transition Day. If you have an aging parent, be sure to check all of their TV sets.

Encouragement: Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the lord.

Check out Rest Ministries on how you can really celebrate your senior citizen dad this year – on TV! It’s definitely one of the best Father’s Day gift ideas I’ve seen.

Here’s a sweet story of loving caregiving – From Pastor to Caregiver .

Then read an interesting article written by that caregiving husband as he talks about one aspect of his life as he and his wife deal with her Alzheimer’s Disease.

This looks like it it would be a good resource for caregivers – an intuitive group calendar to help coordinate caregiving help.

The government has a variety of ways to help grandparents caring for grandkids . I have to wonder, though, how much will get canceled due to the economy.

Looking for something new to read to your grandkids this summer? My grandkids and I have been enjoying reading The Boxcar Children .

Encouragement – Casting all your care upon God; for He cares for you.

Do you have a new grandkid on the way?
SANDWICH GENERATION:

It definitely encouraged this Sandwich Generation caregiver’s heart and I hope it will yours as well.

Be sure that your business emails have all the necessary contact info to help readers reach you. Missing information can mean lost opportunities. Even if we are not “in business,” as caregivers, we often do send out “business” emails to doctors, therapists, etc .

Encouragement – Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Twitter resources for the Sandwich Generation senior home care giver and grandparent including dementia care, recipes, and recipe scams.

Like

<g:plusone size="small" count="" href="http://www.sandwichINK.com/sandwichink-twitter-link-round-up-1909"></g:plusone>

Here are the latest resources from my Twitter “microblog”. As you may recall, Twitter is a fun site that lets you share very short (140 characters maximum) messages with others. Those messages can range from “how’s the weather where you are” to “here’s a great recipe to try” to disaster information. It’s been a great resource for senior home care giving resources, grandparenting fun tips, yummy recipes for our Sandwich Generation families, and even emergency information! I found out about the earthquake in Southern California last night 1/2 hour sooner through Twitter than I did from CNN, Drudge Report, or even the LA Times, thanks to Breaking News Online and others on Twitter.

Ways to Save Money on clothes for grandkids: Target has kids’ clothes on sale for up to 75% off. This can be a good opportunity for grandparents to help their children stock up on clothes for the grandkids. You might also want to buy a few items to keep at your house for clothing accidents during a visit.

Encouragement – A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

I have to tell you, I was quite excited to “meet” an author I thoroughly enjoy online at Twitter. Brandilyn Collins has written several series including my two personal favorites, the Chelsea Adams series and the Hidden Faces series. I personally enjoy such TV crime shows as Criminal Minds, and these two series reminded me of a bit of that series, with a Christian mindset.

Ways to Save Money On Games – Battleship is an older game that’s still popular with today’s youth. Because it’s older, it’s easier to find used at yard sales and thrift stores. My grandson and I had a great time playing it this week.

Food~Fact: Some research seems to show that large amounts of garlic can shorten the duration of cold. Thanks to @Foodimentary for that great tip. My senior mom and I have to second that research. When my family started in on colds, I would head straight for the kitchen and make my dad’s Chicken Soup complete with tons of garlic, chili pepper, and red pepper. Just the smell of it made us feel better and the garlic was great at chasing away the germs!

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.

Here’s a quick reminder to backup your computers, hard drives, email, etc. Good time, also, to run the defragmenter, virus checker, etc.

Got stanky laundry from messy grandkids? I loved the question and loved the advice even more. I’ll definitely be giving that combo a try!

There was another Salmonella outbreak. To be on the safe side, it’s probably wise to not eat unwashed food; raw or undercooked eggs, poultry, or meat; or raw or unpasteurized milk and dairy for the time being.

Another good tip from Foodimentary: To clean a messy bbq grill, use 1/2 of an onion to scrape off the grease and burnt-on food pieces. Use the onion like a scouring pad. I’m looking forward to giving that a try this spring!

Encouragement - In God’s Word I put my hope.

Real Estate Tweeter, OhioRealtor, had a warning for all renters. In this season of mass bankruptcies and foreclosures, watch out for fake landlords and rental scams! Be sure to pass this info on to your elderly parents if they are looking for a rental.

If you are an online entrepreneur or small business owner, you might find one or more ebooks of interest at Toren Brothers’ List of Top 10 Best EBOOKS for Online Entrepreneurs & Small Biz Owners. Many of them are free.

LookingFit.com has an interesting article discussing a study about Vitamin D being linked to the Alzheimer’s Gene. Thanks to Twitter-er Alzheimers98 for that info.

For all of us writers, Glenn Murray of the Divine Write blog, , tipped us off to 50 of the Best Websites for Writers from EduChoices.

Encouragement – The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble.

If you do decide to give Twitter a try and also want to work on your personal finances, Bible Money Matters has a great list of 125 personal finance Twitterers to follow.

I learned a new Beef Stroganoff recipe to share with your whole family, from aging parents to the little grandkids, thanks to babyboomerdivas for linking to that. I must say, they find such yummy recipes!

Great goals for all senior home care givers, whether providing dementia care or general care for aging parents.

Well, that’s it. I hope you enjoyed the latest Sandwich Generation Senior Home Care Giver and Grandparent Twitter round up. There’s more to come in a week or so.
