the sandwich generation issues

Owl toilet seat tattoos regular and elongated to put a smile on our elderly parents faces In Roseville CA and beyondI promise you, this will be 100% G-rated. 🙂  As a mom, grandmother, and caregiver of elderly senior parents, toilets have been a big part of my life all my life – and I bet they have been for you too. I remember sitting by the toilet all night when my grandchild got the tummy bug and threw up over and over, while all I could really do was cuddle her, whisper in her ear that it was ok, and pray lots. She got better, and is much older now, but we both still vividly remember that night. It’s one of those sweet twists of life that it was an awful night that left sweet cuddling memories in both our hearts.

This week, some of my long distance grandkids have experienced the tummy bug and I’m too far away to cuddle, but I can still pray lots, and occasionally get to talk to one on the phone to share loving encouragement as well.

It doesn’t end with the grandkids, does it? Sometimes it’s our elderly parents who need our comforting words, our gentle pats, and our prayers. No, we’re not dealing with the tummy bug – at least not this week. But we have been back on the UTI issue again. And I do want to remind all of you of how much of a negative impact this can have on our elderly parents! And I STILL always have my senior mom tested for a UTI if she isn’t feeling well – and request a culture as well as a stick. And YES, I always recommend asking your own doctor about doing the same. Better safe than sorry!  You can read all the details at:

Also, we are again using a raised toilet seat which is such a big help for our elderly parents as their range of motion and mobility decreases.

Pretty in pink toilet seats have covers to make it warmer for our elderly parents at night in Placer County California and beyondOf course, toilet talk doesn’t have to be all boring. We could also add in some fun things, like the gorgeous owl toilet cover tattoo, the pink rose toilet cover tattoo I shared a while back, and this cool pink toilet seat cover to make things a bit warmer and softer – great for those chilly middle of the night trips, and a lovely way to put a smile on our elderly parents’ faces. And all of these tools are great aging in place helps!  🙂

Multigenerational caregiving for kids and grandkids along with elderly senior parents isn’t always easy. But I really appreciate all the great tips and tools available to help make it at least a little bit easier – for both caree and caregiver. Don’t you?  Do you have any senior citizen or grandkid toilet tips or other aging in place ideas to share with us – here or at my Facebook page? We’d love to hear them.

Beverly's Got tons of cute pink things each Saturday to put a smile on the face of the Sandwich Generation dealing with the issues of caring for the elderly parents and babysitting grandchildren

Today’s article is a guest post from Carla Pennington Kirby, a longtime reader of SandwichINK for the Sandwich Generation, with the story of how she created her TidyTop – an adult bib that looks stylish and works well:

i love this TidyTop pattern for elderly parents grandkids and others-including the comforting Bible verses

Adult Bibs and Bible Verses

Necessity is the Mother of Invention! So when my mother, in her 80’s with MS, requested a bib that didn’t “look” like a bib, it was time to use that necessity to help us do some creative inventing. She wanted something stylish and long enough to cover her lap, where most spills occurred.  Finding a dignified bib was not the simple task I’d envisioned. A Google search and walk through our quaint town of Sandpoint, Idaho produced only short terry cloth or cotton bibs. Mom was hoping for something more unique. So I noodled the idea and sewed one!

It was not your ordinary adult bib. It was longer, using a stain-proof, reversible, light-weight special fabric, with a pocket and a small tote to carry in her purse or wheel chair. I made them in 4 different patterns (roses, hearts, leopard, plaid). She was thrilled and so were her male and female friends in her assisted living community. I sewed for them, too, until I just couldn’t keep up anymore and then decided to manufacture them.

My creation, ultimately named TidyTop, was catching the eye of crafters (great as an art smock), cookers and children, alike.

It was multigenerational! My wonderful techy husband was invaluable in creating a website so others could learn about and benefit from this attractive bib, too.

We entered TidyTop in Medtrade, the largest Medical Supply show in the U.S. this spring and, by the Grace of God, it won “Innovative Product Award of the Year”! It became evident most people, if given the choice, would like a bib with more functionality and one that looked good.

TidyTop Bibs-smocks are great for boomers and seniors and look cute too

While in church one Sunday, our pastor was preaching about “Knowing Jesus and making Him known.” He encouraged us to think about how we could bring the Bible into others’ lives outside of the church. That’s when God planted the seed in my head to put a Proverb in every TidyTop pocket. That’s one of the best parts, tucking a comforting Proverb in each pocket and spreading the Word… one TidyTop at a time!

“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.” Proverbs 17:12

“Kind words are like honey – sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.” Proverbs 16:241

“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” 3 John 2:2

And the list goes on, giving us a delightful way to help, encourage and uplift our senior parents and friends.

Can you tell I like the heart TidyTop bib for aging seniors-messy boomers-grandkids-art-more
WOW! Isn’t that a great story! A stylish blessing for our elderly parents to wear along with comforting encouragement tucked away in the pockets! Not to mention all its terrific multigenerational uses – like bibs for visiting grandkids, art smocks for those easy yet messy crafts for kids and seniors, a big help for this slightly messy baby boomer…  🙂  A sweet gift, indeed. It’s been a challenging month for me while helping an elderly senior long distance and these verses have been such a joy to have handy. I pray they will be a sweet blessing for you as well as together we walk this Sandwich Generation path – full of challenges but often also full of lovely rewards. Have a blessed week.

Encouraging and comforting Bible verses for the Sandwich Generation-wallpaperIt’s not the first of the year! It’s the middle of spring! But here I am, working on a healthier diet – a combination of the South Beach Diet and just plain watching calories, working hard to walk more each day, and making good use of some fun mobile apps for my iPhone to help me with these and other projects. As members of the Sandwich Generation, don’t you find it hard to eat healthy many times – due to all the interruptions? Me too! But the time has come and I have a goal to lose 20-30 pounds. So I re-downloaded an old fave app, Lose It, which helps me track the calorie count of what I eat, as well as checking how many footsteps I take. I am only using it for the calories though, as I have another app for the footsteps that I like better – Pedometer++. It’s very handy, reportedly uses little power on my iPhone and, of the three I’ve tried, it’s the only one that consistently shows me the number as a badge AND shows me footsteps OR miles.

One of my grandkids was over yesterday and he “test-drove” another app I’d tried, Walk Log. That was HIS favorite because it lets you start and stop it AND it shows a map of where you are walking. He had a blast with it and enjoyed leading us around several blocks on our walk using that app. Very handy as well.

Staying busy with grandkids, my senior mom, and my real estate business means it’s doubly important for me to stay healthy – just as it’s vital you also stay proactive with your health – so we can keep on doing what we’re doing! And not just physical health. We need to watch out for our spiritual health as well. Both of these can work together to give us a more positive outlook on life or a more negative outlook, if we let these vital details “fall through the cracks.”

Which brings me to a couple of other mobile apps that are helping me in that arena. Snapseed to edit photos in my phone, MocaDeco to add Bible verses and other words to photos, and ImageChef when I really want to get fancy (like the photos below). Also a brand new one – Instasize – which helps me resize the photo at the top to use it for wallpaper for my iPhone. Here are three versions of this week’s Bible verse for y’all. I made two cute flower photos for my granddaughters and one that I bet my grandsons might prefer.
