The holidays are coming closer and I suspect there’s a wide mixture over how various Sandwich Generation senior home care givers are feeling about it. Some of us are looking forward to it with total glee. Others are in the place I was the year my dad passed away. Our joy and anticipation in the season is tempered by sadness in dealing with our aging parent’s declining health.

I remember going to a Thanksgiving church service and being blessed by the joyful songs and the adorable children’s choir, then going home straight into a new crisis resulting in a trip to the emergency room. We never made it to the church’s Christmas programs which are often one of my favorite holiday traditions. The Hospice program helped so much, and also kept me so busy during that time period. There are many sad memories, but also many blessed ones, like how the kids helped out so wonderfully during the difficult situations, and how his great-grandkids could bring a smile to my dad’s face that little else could do. I especially loved how sweet my parents continued to be with each other during this hard time. It was definitely not our normal holiday season, but it was a blessed season of life!

Other senior home care givers are dealing with aging parents struggling with long-term chronic illnesses such as cancer. Last year, at the end of the holiday season, I read an interesting article by Melanie Haiken, from Caring’s website, How to Celebrate the New Year — with Cancer. It was such a good article, I put it on my calendar to be sure I shared it with you during this holiday season, well before New Year’s! Even though her focus is on cancer, I suspect that much of it is true for most of our aging parents with any kind of debilitating illness. Of course, you always want to check with your own doctor to be sure, but this article should give you some great questions next time you take your aging parents to the doctor’s office. If you aren’t going before the holidays, you could give your advice nurse a call and check with them.

After reading this article of how much our aging parents can probably do during the holiday season, I was greatly encouraged and I hope you will be too.

What about you? Do you have any tips to share with us on how to combine senior home care giving and the holiday season? We’d love to hear them. And be sure to sign up for the SandwichINK free email with plenty of resources to inform and encourage you during the holidays and beyond.

Cancer is again in the news for boomers and seniors this week! Here are some tips and resources for the Sandwich Generation caring for elderly parents with cancer
Post from: SandwichINK.com

Cancer is in the News For Caregivers!

Cancer is an equal opportunity nasty disease and it's definitely in the news right now for some very famous reasons! Some of the famous people who have died in 2009 include Patrick Swayze, Farrah Fawcett, Wayman Tisdale, Bea Arthur, Jack Kemp, Don Hewett, and Ted Kennedy. It affects our loved ones including our beloved seniors. I have several friends waiting for me in heaven due to cancer! I’m grateful I also have a couple of baby boomer and younger-aged relatives who got cancer but did NOT die – very good news! They did, however, require extensive caregiving, as did those who have gone on ahead of us.

I’m sure that many of us who are in the Sandwich Generation, caring for elderly parents, are either dealing with cancer, have dealt with cancer, or will deal with cancer and all its issues when it impacts their family as they deal with the grief and, eventually, perhaps even hospice. It’s a difficult job and I salute each and every one of you as you care for your loved one with courage and, occasionally, tears.

Here are some tips and resources that I hope will help you on this difficult path:

An interesting article, Cancer hurts caregivers, too.

The Association of Oncology Social Work provides tips, links, and caregiving helps specific to caregivers helping patients with cancer.

One site I discovered as part of the most recent Boomers & Seniors: News You Can Use included the Top 50 Oncology Blogs!

The Cancer Blog provides self care tips for cancer caregivers.

About Cancer.com offers tips to recognize and prevent caregiver burnout.

If you know of other sites that provide useful resources and information for senior home care givers and grandparents who are helping cancer patients, please let us know in the comments section below.

Twitter is always a terrific resource for the Sandwich Generation, and this week is no exception:

SENIOR HOME CARE GIVERS:

Cold Sore Virus Linked to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Cancer drug may improve memory in Alzheimer’s patients. Per @ParkinsonsInfo

Here’s a lovely example of sisters, with one providing senior home care for the other.

Years Later, Divorce Complicates Caregiving.

CarePathways has provided a great Senior Home Care Checklist.

GRANDPARENTS:

If you have a grandchild with autism or sensory integration disorder, you might enjoy one of the AMC-Autism Society Sensory Friendly Films. The next one will be Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs in select AMC theatres on September 10.

SANDWICH GENERATION:

Eliminating Clutter Gives New Retirees a Clean Break.

Live Longer through Flossing. Another great site from @Carebuzz. And how’s this for perfect timing, along with another of my favorite ways to save money. I just spotted a website with coupons for those cool little floss sticks that make it easier to floss. I recently discovered they even have extra thin ones to for those with tight teeth and sensitive gums!

Facebook posts may open doors to burglars! With Baby Boomer Generation women being one of the fastest growing Facebook users, this warning really hits home for us! Not only that! The same can be true for Twitter, blogs, and even leaving comments at another site. It’s probably best to write about a vacation AFTER you return.

ChristianAudio is giving a free audio New Testament Bible this month. It’s the God’s Word translation. This is perfect for busy senior home care givers to keep up with Bible time, even when you’re on the run!

Great resources for Sandwich Generation home care givers and grandparents! Two of my two favorite senior / boomer blog carnivals have brand new issues out and they are full of useful information for all of us.

Carebuzz is hosting the Boomers and Seniors: News You Can Use and there you will find, in addition to an article from SandwichINK as well as an article from SandwichINK Real Estate Info:

Adult day care…the best kept secret in eldercare

Exercise Improves Spatial Memory in Seniors

A Timeline Tool For When You Are In The Emergency Room

Top 50 Oncology Blogs

50 Social Sites to Connect With Other Patients Online

And several more interesting articles

After you’re done there, you’ll find that, among other things, EldercareABC is discussing:

A thought-provoking article – Mean Girls at the Senior Center A New Frontier for Bullies

10 Senior Help Tips for an Emergency

An article offering you a free download - “Caring for a Person with Alzheimer’s Disease” Guide for Caregivers, Professionals and Support Groups – definitely one of those great ways to save money!

Both of these blog carnivals are great resources for those of us in the Sandwich Generation and we definitely appreciate Carebuzz and EldercareABC for their hard work on these interesting issues, along with Gina LaGuardia of Seniors For Living and her continued great leadership and coordination of the Boomers and Seniors: News You Can Use.

TIPS TO HELP THE SANDWICH GENERATION RELAX:

Here’s a fun gift idea for Mother’s Day , or one of the myriad of showers coming up in the next few months. Smilebox has cute recipe e-cards that let you combine a favorite recipe with 0-8 photos, depending on which card design you select. Think how delighted your senior mom would be to get one her mom’s old recipes accompanied by photos of her grandchildren. Truly a sweet multi-generational gift. Or what about one of your favorite recipes accompanied by group photos of you and your family and the bride and/or groom as part of a shower gift! Or maybe use baby pictures of the bride and groom? I bet any of these ideas would be a big hit!

Having trouble deciding what movie to see? Relevant Magazine can help with a variety of reviews, including movie reviews. Here’s one for “ State of Play .” It sounds interesting. I may have to give it a try. For other reviews, go to the menu at the top, select FEATURES, then select the last item, REVIEWS.

Two of my many sweet grandkids are twins. How about you? Do any of you have kids/grandkids who are twins?
CAREGIVERS TRAVEL TIPS

Caregivers always seem to be short on time. So when we reserve a car, we expect that car to be there when we get to the reservations booth. What happens if the car you rented ISN’T there? Whether you rented directly through the company or used a third party, there are some options. Check out what one of my favorite travel experts, Christopher Elliott , has to say.

If you will be flying to and from Cincinnati between now and May 12, 2009 (maybe to visit grandkids or elderly parents?), Delta is offering you 25,000 bonus miles!
Alzheimer’s Disease/Dementia:

Have you ever heard of the Medicare Donut Hole? Alzheimer’s Reading Room has a couple of interesting articles on the subject.
Cancer:

   Here are some excellent tips for caregiving for cancer patients .

Sweet and interesting story of a wife and husband and dealing with his Parkinson’s Disease .
Another interesting article, this one about a gentleman with early-onset Parkinson’s Disease .

Speaking of Parkinson’s Disease, here is the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation .

Here’s an excellent resource from the NINDS Parkinson’s Disease Information Page – (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.)

Did you know that people with a family history of melanoma have twice the risk of getting Parkinson’s disease as those who didn’t have a parent and/or sibling with the cancer?

Funerals:

Here are some green and frugal options for funerals, thanks to @ CemeterySpot . Per the Bloomberg news : Cardboard Coffins…Prove Industry is Getting Greener. Also, if you opt for cremation and want to have a viewing before cremation, ask about renting a casket from the funeral home, which can save you quite a bit.

Other:

All of us who are involved in the Seniors and Boomers blog carnival want to invite you to participate.
Carebuzz has a new article, Grants Assist Low Income Seniors . There’s some very useful information in it.

Here’s another thing to monitor when we are overseeing our aging parents health care. Consumer Reports found that the high cost of prescription drugs leads to risky behaviors! Thank you to @ MrElderCare for that valuable tip.

Amy Gates has an excellent article on the dangerous overuse of antibiotics as well as several tips for healthy ways to deal with colds and flu.

"Be kind and merciful. Let no one ever come to you without coming away better and happier." Mother Teresa

“He said, I will never leave you, nor forsake you. The Lord is my helper…"

Seniors for Living has some excellent information to read up on before you have to deal with an elderly parent in the hospital.

  If your elderly parent does have to go to the hospital, here’s some encouraging news from @MrElderCare - ICUs see big drop in dangerous staph superbugs.

  The Lord will give strength to His people.

Would you like a tiny, inexpensive mp3 player to take to the gym. Perhaps you’ve been wanting to give one to a grandchild but didn’t want to spend a lot in case they lost it or broke it. Amazon carries a SanDisk Sansa Express . It looks and acts just like a stick/thumb drive. You insert it into the USB port of your computer to recharge it or add/delete songs/audio files. It holds up to 500 MP3 files (16 hours) or 1,000 WMA files (32 hours) and it also has an FM tuner and a voice recorder. It supports MP3, WMA, WAV, Audible, and protected WMA playback. You can find it at Amazon, or keep an eye out at FatWallet, and other discount sites as it seems to go on sale fairly often. Thanks to @ affiliatetip for this frugal tip.

Speaking of computers, here’s an interesting article -“99 Ways to Speed Up Your Computer ” which you can find at Help Desk Geek’s blog. I’m in the process of reformatting a misbehaving laptop at the moment. When that’s done, I’m going to give some of these ideas a whirl!

Ahhhh. Another sweet smile. Here’s an adorable picture of family love – kitty style. Do you think it’s grandma hugging grandson?

Just a reminder that if you have problems finding shoes that are comfortable to wear and look stylish, perhaps because of arthritis, Barking Dog Shoe’s blog is an excellent resource.

In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for You alone, O Lord, make me to dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8 – My favorite verse on tough nights.

WCTV in Florida has some interesting statistics on Alzheimer’s Disease at per @twitterbo.
Top Cancer Prevention Tips – http://tinyurl.com/d2qhek – was posted by Carol of Home Care Phoenix.

Reuters followed that up with even more information on the impact that even a single glass of alcohol per day can have on women. http://is.gd/kOz3

Instead of that glass of wine, it might be wise to have a glass of apple juice. Not only will it not cause cancer, it could fight off Alzheimer’s Disease! http://jijr.com/sKE If you’re like me and dislike the taste of apple juice, there are several juices available with a mixture of berry and apple which are quite tasty. Thank you to @twitterbo for this link.

The number of kids as caregivers is increasing. These numbers include those caring for parents AND grandparents http://is.gd/kOHY .

In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Here’s a fun smile for you. Worm crashes computer. A *real* worm! http://hellotxt.com/l/llRQ By the way, even though you probably don’t have any worms – real or virtual – it’s never too soon to back up your computer, run your virus checker and defragmenter, and see if there are any files you can weed out.

Breadmaking was quite popular among my group of friends umpteen years ago, when my kids were little, and life was so much simpler (Well, it seems like it now. Back then, I’m sure I would have disagreed with myself.) Penny Raine’s picture at her website brought back delightful and yummy-smelling memories . http://tinyurl.com/c72ets

If you are exploring various ways to provide extra housing for elderly relatives, adult kids returning to the nest, or grandkids , here is an intriguing option – micro homes using shipping containers. http://is.gd/kNLH . If you read that and want to know more, be sure to check out http://renaissanceronin.wordpress.com/ as well as some of the other links in the comment section.You’ll find lots of “thinking outside the box” ideas that may well provide a solution to your situation. Just be sure to check with all the city/county government agencies first before making any firm commitments.

If your elderly parents would like to stay in their own home longer, here’s an article they might enjoy reading. Automated ‘Intelligent’ Houses Help Elderly Stay In Homes Longer http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/02/090213115332.htm . Thanks to @skriv for the info.

If your adult kid wants their own home, here’s some great information to share with them. First Time Homebuyer Tax Credit of $8,000 in 2009 Economic Stimulus Package http://tinyurl.com/bkh3dc .

Speaking of the Stimulus package , Bible Money Matters has done a good breakdown on it: http://www.biblemoneymatters.com/2009/02/how-much-extra-will-i-see-in-my-paycheck-because-of-the-2009-economic-stimulus-package.html

Research is something I love and do well at. I inherited that love for learning from my mom and have passed it on to all my daughters. Now it comes back as a blessing to me even more, when they discover something useful to share with me, just as my mom and I have done for years. One of those things a daughter shared was an excellent book for families dealing with a loved one who is seriously ill.

“The Complete Bedside Companion” by Rodger McFarlane and Philip Bashe is not light reading. After my daughter told me about it, I immediately ordered a copy from Amazon. It arrived today and my first thought was, “Oooh, I can’t wait to sit down and read it.” But as I thumbed through it, I realized it really isn’t that kind of book. Or maybe I should say, it’s that kind of book and so much more! Basically, it is an encyclopedia for people who are going through difficult times with serious medical illnesses, or who may even be on hospice. I wish I’d had it when my dad was so ill, and again to help a friend who recently lost his wife! To give you a hint of what it contains, here are the primary titles from the table of contents:

Part 1: Caring for the Sick

The Hospital & The Medical Team: Who’s Who and What’s What

Dealing with the Doctors

The Everyday Angel’s Cram Course in Essential Nursing Skills

Matters of the Heart

Mustering the Troops

The Caregiver as Consumer Activist

Care for the Caregivers

Paying the Bills

Preparing for the Worst

Journey’s End

Aftermath

Part 2: The Everyday’s Angel’s Cram Course in Adult Medicine

Caring for Someone with Cancer

Caring for Someone with Cardiovascular Disease

Caring for Someone with Cerebrovascular Stroke or Traumatic Brain Injury

Caring for Someone with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (Emphysema and Chronic Bronchitis)

Caring for Someone with Diabetes

Caring for Someone with AIDS/HIV

Caring for Someone with Liver Disease

Caring for Someone with Kidney Disease

Caring for Someone with a Progressive Neurological Disease

For more specific details of what it contains, you can go to Amazon and look at the Table of Contents. Under each of the above topics, you will find five – ten subtitles! The Complete Bedside Companion: A No-Nonsense Guide to Caring for the Seriously Ill

The book is well written, well documented, and often uses personal stories intermixed with the dryer medical factual information. It’s much more interesting than a Merck Manual, though I love that book as well. It goes into the broad strokes of major diseases and the nitty gritty details of a wide variety of things such as how to clean patients after they’ve gone to the bathroom in the bed, or helping to toilet a loved one who suffers from memory loss, confusion, or intellectual impairment. It has hints and tips given by caregivers going through the actual experience, giving advice on how to coordinate help from other family members, or suggesting that you change the voicemail message daily with a health update so you don’t have to say the same thing over and over.

The book is copyrighted 1999 and I would imagine some medical practices may have changed. As with any resource, it’s still vital to ask plenty of questions and go with what your doctor recommends. But this gives plenty of information that will probably never go out of date.

I am going to be adding this to my list of MUST-RECOMMEND books for anyone going through major health crises, and I highly recommend it to all who are or think they will be caregivers including those of us in the Sandwich Generation.

“All that money you’ve lost – where did it go?;” “Russia test fires long-range missile…warships call in Libya;” “Foreclosure Activity Increases 8 Percent in July;” “Thyroid cancer on the rise;” “Hurricane Slams Into Mexico;” “FDIC Seizes Two More Banks.” These are all actual headlines from around the country and around the world. And as if all this bad news wasn’t enough, how about the biggie – “World gripped by largest financial crisis in 100 years!”

For caregivers, this means double or triple what it means to the every day “man on the street.” We are not just dealing with these crises as individuals. We are dealing with our own set of problems, while juggling the problems one or more of our loved ones is facing. It can be frustrating, depressing, and even frightening.

As I was working on my Bible study today, and reflecting on these different thoughts, God reminded me that we need to look at these headlines and these problems with spiritual eyes. No matter what it may feel like, we are never alone. I found some some wonderful encouragement from the book of Psalms:

Clap your hands, all peoples;
Shout to God with the voice of joy.
For the LORD Most High is to be feared,
A great King over all the earth.
He subdues peoples under us
And nations under our feet…
Sing praises to God, sing praises;
Sing praises to our King, sing praises.
For God is the King of all the earth;
Sing praises with a skillful psalm.
God reigns over the nations,
God sits on His holy throne.
The princes of the people have assembled themselves as the people of the God of Abraham,
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
He is highly exalted. Psalm 47:1-3,6-9

When we are feeling afraid, nervous, or even angry at what is going on, we need to turn away from the problems and turn to the problem-solver, God. One way I like to do that is to print out verses like these, and carry them with me. Whenever I get a minute, I read a portion of it, and then just keep thinking about that, meditating on it, and praying through it. It’s like letting them soak into my “spiritual pores.” I would encourage you to let God’s Word minister to you today and every day. A good passage for that would be Psalm 57. I love to think of my problems as lions which breathe forth fire! I know that God is more powerful than them!

Be gracious to me, O God, be gracious to me,
For my soul takes refuge in You;
And in the shadow of Your wings I will take refuge
Until destruction passes by.
I will cry to God Most High,
To God who accomplishes all things for me.
He will send from heaven and save me;
He reproaches him who tramples upon me.

God will send forth His lovingkindness and His truth.
My soul is among lions;
I must lie among those who breathe forth fire,
Even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows
And their tongue a sharp sword.
Be exalted above the heavens, O God;
Let Your glory be above all the earth.
They have prepared a net for my steps;
My soul is bowed down;
They dug a pit before me;
They themselves have fallen into the midst of it.

My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast;
I will sing, yes, I will sing praises!
Awake, my glory!
Awake, harp and lyre!
I will awaken the dawn.
I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples;
I will sing praises to You among the nations.
For Your lovingkindness is great to the heavens
And Your truth to the clouds.
Be exalted above the heavens, O God;
Let Your glory be above all the earth.

So next time you hear a news headline that threatens your peace of mind, grab your Bible or that printout of verses and start meditating away. Allow God’s Words and His love to make your heart steadfast once more.
