Need Words of Encouragement? Try These Praise and Worship Songs!

by on February 28, 2010

As a Sandwich Generation senior home care giver and grandmother, I have plenty of good days and more bad days than I would like – from concern for an elderly parent who is sick to frustration over trying to help a grandkid with math when my own arithmetic skills aren't the greatest (to say the least :) ) to just plain being tired and cranky due to not enough sleep.

Yesterday was definitely one of "those" days. I was feeling so stressed I put aside my writing project and decided to clean my office. As I did, I turned on some of my favorite praise and worship songs, including Avalon's CD, Faith: A Hymns Collection.

After an hour, my whole mood had brightened from the music and lyrics I had been listening to. Thanks to these praise and worship songs, I had focused on God instead of problems. I spent time praying, confessing my own crankiness, forgiving someone else, and generally spending some quality time with God. As one of their songs, Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee, says:

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;

Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away;

Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

That's exactly how I felt – like a bunched up flower bulb that started relaxing, unfolding, and opening up to God through praise and worship and prayer! It was a wonderful picture of Psalm 16:11, "You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever." (Talk about wonderful and inspirational Bible verses! :) )

I appreciate it so much when God uses praise and worship songs like these in my life to encourage me and nudge me in the way I should go in this busy Sandwich Generation life. And yes, I was also thrilled that at the end of this "pity turned to praise party" my office was relatively neat and I'd finally found my missing mp3 player full of my oldest grandkid's favorite praise and worship songs including Britt Nicole – The Lost Get Found along with Avalon – Faith (don't you love it when you and and your grandkids love the same music! :) )

How about you? What are some of your favorite praise and worship songs full of words of encouragement for your tough days? What ones give you words to encourage your elderly parents and your young grandkids? We'd love to hear! We'd also love for you to sign up for the FREE SandwichINK email for more words of encouragement for Sandwich Generation senior home caregivers and grandparents.

Hi Amy Deanne, I’m with you! I have sung “I will praise You in this storm” so many times, including times of tears, and it never fails to encourage me! :)
