When I wrote Caring for Elderly Parents? Have You Heard of Acute Confusional State (Delirium) From Hospital Stays?, I did some research about Medicare including at the Medicare website. (By the way, very important – the official Medicare website is http://www.Medicare.gov - notice it ends in .GOV !!! ) I must say, they truly are a big help to the Sandwich Generation dealing with the issues of caring for elderly parents. Among other things, I discovered Medicare has a valuable new brochure out for us, that is available online, Medicare & You, 2010.
In it you will find:
- What’s new with Medicare
- Medicare costs
- What Medicare covers
- Health and Prescription drug plans
- Your Medicare rights
- Health information technology
- Extra help for more than 2 million people who qualify to get extra help with prescription drug costs and don’t know it
- How to get future eHandbooks sent to you
- Medicare’s preventive services
- Childrens (and grandchildrens) health insurance program
- And so much more…
Also, if you are confused about upcoming changes due to the new health laws, you're not alone. And the Medicare website has information about that as well. In fact, they have over 120 publications full of useful information for all of us in the Sandwich Generation!
The Medicare website really is a wonderful resource for all of us in the hate-to-admit-we-are-aging-but-LOVE-Medicare Baby Boomers Generation caring for elderly parents, not to mention those of us who already qualify for Medicare for ourselves!

I just had to help find a skilled nursing center for my Dad. One of the first spots I went to was medicare.gov to check their ratings. Then we went in person and it was well matched.
Hi Mary, Thanks for letting us know that. I used them for that with my dad when he was having issues with medications but as it turned out, none near us had openings so they put us on the waiting list. And we were grateful the issues were finally resolved and we did ok. But I was sure glad they offered that option! I’m praying for you and your dad
