You CAN Have the Fruit of the Spirit For Your Grandkids’ Summer Project – Part 1

by Kaye Swain on June 3, 2009

Well fellow grandparents, it’s that time again. The grandkids are out of school. For many of us, that means more time with them, more fun activities – both hot and wet, and more head scratching to come up with creative, interesting, and educational things to do in all that extra time!

As I wrote in Planting God’s Love in Grandkids’ Hearts and A Caregiver’s Love is Patient , I’m doing a summer project with my grandkids based on the Fruit of the Spirit passage from Galatians. I thought you might enjoy finding some useful tools and ideas with me.

As I was looking for activity sheets and projects I found a terrific music video from YouTube that I want to share with you. Even if you don’t do this project, I think you and your grandkids will enjoy the video. My grandkids and I have been having a blast singing it together periodically. There’s actually a few different versions of this song but this particular one is our favorite.

I’m using the New International Version (NIV) for my grandkids, which is the same version in the song. I am also just having them memorize Galatians 5:22-23a. Since they are younger, it’s easier for them to understand.

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23a

Here’s some sites with great resources, such as coloring pages, mazes, word puzzles, and more:

DLTK has a nice teacher’s guide for teaching about the different fruit. They also found some really cute fruit pictures at ColoringWS that I know my grandkids will enjoy. In addition, they have an interesting cadence, a spoken marching “song.” I like it, but it is in a different order. I think it would be good for older grandkids who won’t get mixed up, but I’ll probably skip it for this year. DLTK is definitely a one-stop shop for the Fruit of the Spirit, as these worksheets and mazes prove.

Well, this post turned out to be so long, I’ve broken it into two parts. Be sure to also read You CAN Have the Fruit of the Spirit For Your Grandkids’ Summer Project – Part 2 , with the actual verses we’re hoping to memorize.

As always, I value your input. If you have any ideas or suggestions for this summer project, we’d love to hear from you. Just leave them in the comments section below. And thank you so much for them. :)
