Grandparent Smiles

My busy summer continues as does the summer HEAT! But now it’s being interwoven with hints of AUTUMN smiles to come! And, of course, that will be followed, all too quickly, by holiday joys and winter chills! The years just seem to zip by, don’t they? This week I was blessed to spend some quality time with grandkids and it was full of sweet smiles! Now, it’s my granddog who is following me around the house, giving me his soulful gaze as he finishes his plate WAY too fast and I am still eating. And yes, he’s an adorable joy too!

Pokemon Go Tips and Tricks

Rose Joys Kaye Swain Roseville REALTOR Pokemon Go Critter smiles

You’ll probably laugh when I tell you about my latest post at my local blog, Roseville California Joys. It’s all about the latest craze, Pokemon Go. I’m quite happy that, so far, my grandkids have not delved into it. Yes, it can be fun, Yes, it does get kids outside and walking more. And yes, if they are doing it as a family project, which many are, it’s probably just fine and full of happy chats and smiles.

Unfortunately, not all kids are being as careful as they need to be, or sticking with a group or buddy system. That has led to some teens being robbed by others who figured out where Pokemon Critters were and hid there! Not fun! You can read more about that by clicking here. Yes, it’s a Roseville article BUT most of it applies wherever you live and has tips, tricks, and caveats to help you in case any of YOUR grandkids have taken it up.

Senior Gardening Tomato Sorrows and Sunflower Smiles

My senior mom’s garden is down to the last two tomatoes on the last of her plants. It was not a great year for her tomato plants. But she felt better after she read an article in our local paper, the Sacramento Bee. Apparently it was a bad tomato year for most everyone due to the heat! The article did list some of the best plants of the bunch though, so we’ll remember those for next year and hope for more smiles then. Did you have a summer garden? How did it do?

We discovered this past week that her bird feeding joys will have to end as the seeds apparently are attracting the wrong kind of critter to our yard. Probably due to the heat as well. So she decided to forego the seed and add a bird bath or two, along with some bird-attracting flowers like lovely sunflowers and coneflowers. Plenty of smiles with them! She’s been enjoying watering them and talking to them this past week. Floral smiles, indeed.

Cool Bible for Teens

One of my grandsons had a birthday recently. We discovered a great Bible to give him as part of his birthday gift. It was time for a big kids’ Bible…past time really….he’s a TEEN!!!!! Very COOOOOOOL! I was leaning towards my personal favorite – the Life Application Study Bible for Teens. But since they already had one in their bookshelf, I went with a new-to-me and very cool Bible for students including teens and older kids – the Apologetics Study Bible by Josh McDowell’s son,  Dr. Sean McDowell, and the Holman Bible Staff. We have long been blessed by Josh McDowell’s ministry including his books More Than A Carpenter and Evidence that Demands a Verdict, which his son Sean McDowell helped write. I think it will be an excellent resource for my grandkids! I ordered my grandson one with a leather like cover in brown

I’m really looking forward to using it with him over the year to come.

Encouraging Verses and Scripture Picture

All this talk of senior gardening and the Bible reminded me of one of my fave encouraging verses. You could kinda paraphrase it like,

The tomatoes fail…..

the grass withers, the flower fades, but the Word of our God stands forever.

AUTUMN BLISS FOR BOOMERS AND SENIORS

Sweet autumn temps for Roseville CA real estate agent blogger Kaye Swain blog 1200

I am so thrilled that our temperatures, while popping up into the 90s for a day or so, are again headed straight back down to the 80s. Hooray. Autumn is truly here, the leaves are starting to turn, and I’m continuing to enjoy autumn bliss offline AND online.  Online you ask? Yup! Between Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Fall Blog Linky Parties, I’m thoroughly enjoying every gorgeous autumn color you can imagine. What a sweet treat for the senses!

CARING FOR ELDERLY PARENTS

Swim shoes are a big help for boomers and seniors caring for elderly parents and swimming via Kaye Swain Roseville California real estate agent and SandwichINK blogger

Even though summer has said good-bye, my senior mom and I are still enjoying walking in the swimming pool. It’s great exercise for both of us and something she can do more easily than most other exercises. It’s an indoor pool that’s heated so theoretically we should be able to do it year round. I tend to get too cold in the winter months while she used to enjoy it all the time. I’ve noticed this year that she is getting chillier too. So we shall see.

One thing we both noticed is that we have been getting foot and leg cramps while walking. That’s never happened before and I’m not sure why. Perhaps the rubber pad they use to walk on. Though I’ve walked on these at other gyms as well??? I decided to get us both some water shoes to see if that would help. We tried them for the first time today. They aren’t the prettiest things in the world. BUT, my mom only got one minor cramp that went away quickly and I didn’t get any. So I’m hoping these will be a good solution for us both and thought I’d share the idea with y’all in case any of you have ever had this issue. And YES, if you have suggestions, do share them as well. 🙂

GRANDCHILDREN JOYS

Thanksgiving project with grandkids via Kaye Swain Roseville CA real estate agent blogger

It’s such a sweet treat when a grandchild calls us, isn’t it? And even better when they want our advice. A couple of my granddaughters called yesterday and asked if I had any autumn crafts to suggest as they wanted to do some that afternoon. I shared some fun and easy ones like making Thanksgiving turkeys with hands, similar to the wreath we did a few years ago – then writing people or things they were thankful for on each feather. I also added a couple of goodies quickly to my Pinterest board, Grand for Kids and Grandkids and sent them the link for that. They were quite excited, indeed. And I can’t wait to see what they made.

Nothing But the Blood Of Jesus” is one of the lovely old Christian hymns that I do so love. We sang it in church this week as we took communion and it was such a sweet blessing. When I went looking for a video for it, I discovered several different versions – all beautiful. Some were sung very slowly. Some were sung really fast (one of my fave versions is like that 🙂 ). I saved all the ones I loved to my Sunday Sunday Blessings playlist at Youtube, along with a few other lovely hymns I discovered along the way. That way you can enjoy listening to as many or as few others as you would like. But I chose this version, by Guy Penrod who often sings with the Gaither family, for sharing here as the tempo was right in the middle. Not too slow, not too fast. And very sweetly encouraging – as were all the other versions as well, no matter the tempo, due to the awesome words including, “What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus; What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.” Such a vital truth for us all!

One of my fave Bible teachers, David Guzik, continues his sermon series on the book of John at YouTube. You can find his church’s channel by CLICKING HERE. I’m also adding this sermon series to a playlist at my own YouTube channel – Bible Studies – Verse By Verse  each week, to make it easy to find it and others as I share them.

Have a blessed and beautiful week!

Kaye

My senior mom LOVES these the best of this years gardening activities

The Joys of Gardening! Let me count them:

It's great for young and old – making it perfect for the Sandwich Generation!

Gardening keeps my senior mom active, even on bad days.

It puts smiles on her face daily

Keeps her brain active as she figures out the best ways to battle the critters out to get her seeds!

My senior moms gardening activities include creative critter guards like this pink and silver pinwheel and the marigold guarding her peppers
It gives her yummy vegetables to eat each summer. This year she has tomatos and sweet peppers and is thrilled at how good they are growing

My senior moms gardening activities include plenty of tomatos - YAY

Gives her a great hobby to do outside

Gives her something fun to read about on days too hot or cold to go outside

Gives her special moments with the grandkids as they plant seeds or water plants together

Gives her something new to talk to the grandkids about all the time

The grandkids are learning how to plant flowers and vegetables (I wonder how many kids NEVER plant things any more, except maybe in a school project?)

Educational fun for the grandkids

Just plain old fun, like the Sunflower House project, for the grandkids.

It's a great way for all of us to be reminded of God's creative power at work in plants AND in us.

Leads to more butterflies and bees and birds in the yard.

My senior mom loves her birds and makes sure they have plenty of food and water on hot days and cool ones

Now it's your turn. What are some of the sweet joys of gardening in YOUR Sandwich Generation family? We'd love to hear.

Spring can't seem to make up its mind! First it tries to be summer, then late winter, then back to summer…with occasional and very delightful moments of actual spring! My senior mom, grandkids and I never know what to wear or what to plan anymore! Shorts, sweater, swim suits. SWIM SUITS?!?!?!?!

Yup! It was so warm this week we brought out our little wading pool and the grand-twins had a fun time wading…AFTER we added a few buckets of warm water to it. While they played, my senior mom enjoyed watching them from the kitchen window (aren't those windows a sweet blessing) while I trimmed back her butterfly bush from our past year's gardening activities.

My mom's health continues to meddle with her plans so she's decided to turn the sunflower plot over to the grandkids and me while she focuses on her pots of tomatoes and herbs along with her hydrangea to brighten things up. By working on them on the patio table, she can reach everything easily and work on her plants as long or as little as she likes. It's not as much gardening as she'd like but it does keep her active and involved and she's very happy about that, as am I.

Then she heads back into the house to enjoy her latest audio book on her iPad. She commented the other day, "I wish I'd gotten this the FIRST time you suggested it. I LOVE it!" Now that's definitely music to this Sandwich Generation caregiver's ears!  🙂
